Hen & Cock Mountain Race

The Hen & Cock event is a mountain running race held in Down as part of the Hill and Dales series. The competition is organized by Newcastle AC and follows a route through rocky terrain. Participants navigate a course that covers a distance of 6.0 km with total ascent and descent reaching 450 meters.

The course features only major junctions marked, requiring participants to navigate without the use of GPS devices. The terrain is categorized by the Irish Mountain Running Association as easy for mountain running standards, despite the steep incline.

Safety regulations for this event require Level B mandatory kit for all participants. Runners must carry the following equipment:

  • A waterproof jacket
  • A hat or buff
  • Gloves
  • A whistle
  • A charged mobile phone with the emergency number stored
  • A foil blanket, bivvy bag, or equivalent emergency shelter

The race is integrated into the Hill and Dales League and is conducted according to the regulations of the Irish Mountain Running Association.
