Heart of Granite

Heart of Granite is a circular fell race held in the Galloway mountains. The event covers a distance of 32 km (20 miles) and features approximately 1850 m of total ascent. The route starts and finishes at the Caldons Old Campsite in Glen Trool, near Newton Stewart.

The course passes several notable landmarks in the Galloway hills. From the valley, participants climb to Lamachan and follow the ridge to Curleywee. The route then descends to the Axe Head stone on the Southern Upland Way, where a checkpoint provides water and food. Runners continue to the summit of Craiglee, cross a plateau, and follow a long descent along the Rig of Jarkness.

The final section of the race includes a path past the Murder Hole to the base of the Old Grey Man of Merrick. Participants climb to the summit of Merrick before a descent toward Bruce's Stone and a final stretch through the valley back to the finish line.

The event is held under Scottish Hill Runners (SHR) rules and requires participants to be at least 18 years old. Due to the potential for winter conditions and the nature of the terrain, runners must have fell running experience and navigation skills.

Available distances:

  • 32 km

Mandatory equipment for all participants includes a map, compass, whistle, and a head torch. Runners must also carry or wear a hat, gloves, and waterproof clothing with taped seams, including both a top with an integral hood and bottoms.

Galloway Mountain Rescue Team marshals provide support along the course, including first aid cover and staffing at checkpoints. Upon returning to the finish, participants receive vegetable soup and a local beer. All proceeds from the race are donated to the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team.
