Great Western Half Marathon & 10K
The Great Western event is organized by Fox River Trail Runners and features a competitive, flat, out and back course on the western portion of the Great Western Trail. The trail surface on the race route is limestone, and the event continues a local tradition that follows the former Chicago Great Western Railway corridor.
The club reports a history of more than 25 years hosting this half marathon and 10K. For 2027 the event is scheduled for Sunday May 2, 2027 and registration is not yet open. The organizer donates five dollars per participant registration and accepts additional participant donations; those funds are split equally among three local mental health nonprofit partners. In 2026 the combined participant donations and the club contribution generated a total of $2,400 for the charities.
From Rails to Trails facts noted by the organizer include the Chicago Great Western Railway operating from 1885 to 1968 and the corridor being repurposed for public trail use beginning in 1978. The event list of 2026 supporters included a principal sustaining sponsor and a race sponsor.
