Furbutt's Backyard 24 Hour
Furbutt's Backyard 24 Hour is a Backyard format ultrarun held over Memorial Day at Meadowood Special Recreation Area on Mason Neck near Lorton, Virginia. The event uses a looped course that starts and finishes under a large horse pavilion at the corner of Gunston Road and Harley Road. The event limit is 24 hours or 100 miles, with a total ascent and descent of about 7,800 feet.
The Backyard format gives runners one hour to complete a 4.167-mile loop. Runners must be in the start corral at the top of each hour to begin the next loop; failure to return to the corral on time results in elimination. The course begins with 0.7 miles on a flat open grassy field, then follows mostly flat dirt and crushed gravel bridle trails through woods and occasional meadows. Elevation gain per loop is roughly 300 to 350 feet.
Entry opens Tuesday March 23, 2027 at 9:00 am and is limited to 100 runners. A modest fee of $25 helps cover permit and event expenses. There is a single aid station under the pavilion where water, ice, Gatorade, and some snacks are provided; runners are expected to bring any additional food or personal supplies for their own use. Crews are allowed only at the main aid station and must stay outside the corral once a yard has begun. Parking is on the grass field behind the pavilion, placing vehicles close to the start area.
The club does not provide medical personnel or supplies on course. Runners are responsible for their own health and safety and should plan accordingly. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
