Course format and safety All segments are short loops inside the state park and are marked and staffed by volunteers. The swim takes place off the park beach on Lake Louisa, a shallow lake with depths up to about 8 to 9 feet and typical water temperatures around 65 to 70 degrees, so wetsuits are recommended. The swim loop is 2,112 feet (644 meters) with a swim line of 1,056 feet (322 meters); lap counts vary by distance. Aid station floats are available at the main buoy area. Flotation devices and fins are not permitted. Swim cutoffs are set in hours relative to race start based on category.
The bike loop is 6.009 miles (9.670 kilometers) out and back, mostly flat with two medium hills and some small rollers. Partial first-lap routing is used for some distances to achieve exact mileage. Night riding requires a white front light and red rear flashing light and a helmet meeting ANSI or Snell standards; drafting is prohibited. The run is a 1.00769 mile loop on asphalt with lap counts by category; headlamps and rear visibility lights are required after dark. Crew support must remain in the race village and is not allowed on course during the run, though friends and family may join an athlete on the final lap.
