16th Annual Driathlon
The Driathlon is a triathlon variant hosted by the Bay City Morning Rotary Club that replaces the traditional swimming leg with a paddle. Participants navigate a three-part course consisting of a 5 km paddle, a 20 km bike ride, and a 5 km run. The event starts and finishes at Castaways Bay City.
The competition offers several ways to participate:
- Canoe Team Division: Two partners participate in all three events together (5 km canoe, 20 km bike, and 5 km run).
- Canoe Relay Division: Two partners complete the canoe together, then one partner bikes and the other runs.
- Individual Kayak Division: A solo category consisting of a 5 km paddle, 20 km bike, and 5 km run. Participants may use their own kayak or rent one from the organizer.
The paddle portion takes place on the Kawkawlin River, starting with a 1.5-mile upstream section before turning back toward the transition area. Two-person canoes are provided for the canoe divisions. The cycling segment is a three-loop course totaling approximately 20 km on Bangor Township roads. This is an open course where participants follow a right-turn loop past Castaways for each circuit. The final 5 km run is a road course on Kawkawlin River Drive to a turn-around point at Euclid Avenue.
Official timing is provided via chips attached to race bibs. The transition area at Castaways opens early for equipment setup and bike racking. All participants receive a tech shirt, finishers medal, and post-race food. Registration is limited to 100 teams/relays and 50 individual kayakers.
