Doc Dash
Doc Dash is an annual 5K event organized by the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. The main event is a 5K open to runners, joggers, walkers, and adaptive participants. The adaptive division welcomes participants with physical, intellectual, or visual impairments and includes support from physical therapy students who assist adaptive participants using equipment or requiring assistance.
The course begins at the medical campus, continues through nearby neighborhoods and the river trail, and loops back to the finish area. A separate children’s event called Docling Dash takes place in the courtyard of the Medical Education and Research Facility (MERF). Docling Dash is a variable-lap race recommended for children aged 10 or younger and awards medals to children at the end of their final lap. Herky has been tentatively reserved for the Docling Dash for photo opportunities.
Proceeds from the event are donated to the Iowa City Free Medical and Dental Clinic and the University of Iowa Mobile Clinic. These organizations provide medical and dental services to underserved people who are uninsured or under-insured. Volunteers for the clinics and the event include students and staff from the College of Medicine and other healthcare programs such as physical therapy and pharmacy.
