Deadwater Dirty Duathlon
The Deadwater Dirty Duathlon is a winter multi-sport event located at Kielder Castle in Northumberland. The competition features a run-bike-run format that takes participants through trail running paths and mountain bike tracks. The course includes steep running sections and red-graded mountain bike trails that reach the summit of Deadwater, depending on weather conditions.
Participants can enter the event as solo competitors or in pairs to split the different stages. The route is marked with different colored signs for the running and cycling legs, and GPS files are provided for navigation. Some trail sections are closed to the public, while others remain open.
The event includes several distances:
- 10 km first run
- 12 km mountain bike leg on red graded trails
- 7.5 km second run
A transition area is located at the castle, where bikes are stored on racking. Competitors are required to have a fully functioning mountain bike or gravel bike and a helmet. Recommended gear includes an emergency whistle and a waterproof or windproof jacket.
Facilities at Kielder Castle include registration areas, public toilets, and parking within walking distance. While official camping is not available, van and motorhome parking is permitted in the castle car park for a fee. Participants are advised to bring their own water supply as local sources may freeze during the winter months. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
