GMAA Champlain Islands Marathon and Half Marathon
The Champlain Islands Marathon and Half Marathon is organized by the Green Mountain Athletic Association (GMAA). The event takes place in South Hero, Vermont, with the start and finish lines located at Folsom Elementary School. The location is significant as it is near the former residence of Clarence H. DeMar, a seven-time winner of the Boston Marathon.
The race features two distinct distances:
- Marathon (26.2 miles)
- Half Marathon (13.1 miles)
The course is USATF certified (VT24002JK) and consists entirely of paved surfaces. The terrain is categorized as flat to rolling. Participants follow an out and back route along the west shore of South Hero and Grand Isle. The path travels through a landscape of dairy farms, apple orchards, and summer cottages, offering views of the Vermont countryside and Lake Champlain.
The half marathon is a single out and back loop, while the full marathon consists of two laps of the same course. The event takes place during the autumn season, typically coinciding with peak foliage in the Lake Champlain Islands. Registration is conducted online and the event has a history of reaching full capacity. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
