Event Overview
The Champlain Islands Marathon & Half Marathon takes place in South Hero, Vermont, with the start and finish lines located at Folsom Elementary School. The event is organized by the Green Mountain Athletic Association and offers a paved running route through a landscape of farms, apple orchards, and summer cottages along the west shore of South Hero and Grand Isle.
The course features flat to rolling terrain with a minimum elevation of 100 feet and a maximum elevation of 210 feet. The marathon course is USATF certified and can be used as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
Distances
- Marathon: A 26.2 mile course consisting of two out-and-back loops.
- Half Marathon: A 13.1 mile out-and-back course on the west shore.
Event Details
Participation is limited to a total of 500 runners, and participants must be at least 16 years of age. The marathon has a course time limit of 6 hours, while the half marathon has a limit of 4 hours. There are 12 aid stations positioned approximately every 2 miles, beginning at mile 2 and ending at mile 24. These stations provide water and electrolyte drinks, and porta-potties are available at select locations on the course.
All finishers receive a medal, and race shirts are provided to all participants. Awards are presented to top overall finishers, masters, and age-group winners. The use of headphones is discouraged, and baby joggers or dogs are not permitted on the course due to insurance regulations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
