Event Overview
The Day of the Dead Half Marathon is an October running event in Houston themed around the Dia de los Muertos celebration. It features a costume contest judged for creativity and authenticity, with a prize awarded before the race start.
Event Distances
The event offers several race distances:
- Kids Dash (approx. 20-yard dash for children 10 and under)
- 1 Mile Run
- 5K (3.1 miles)
- Quarter Marathon (6.55 miles)
- Half Marathon (13.1 miles)
Course and Amenities
The course starts at the Kingdom Builders Center on West Orem Drive and is described as weaving through parks with lush landscapes, lakes, and trees. Courses may include pavement, crushed granite, and dirt paths. Aid stations providing water are located along the routes. A post-race celebration at a rally tent features live music and Mexican food and drinks.
Timing and Awards
The 5K, Quarter Marathon, and Half Marathon distances are chip-timed. The Kids Dash and 1 Mile Run are not timed. Awards are presented live after the finish. Overall male and female winners in the timed events receive Bigfoot trophies, while overall Masters winners (age 40+) receive a special recognition pin. Age group awards (gold, silver, bronze pins) are given for many categories.
Participant Details
All participants receive a race shirt and finisher medal, with a shirt guarantee cutoff 10 days before the event. There is a "Volunteer then Run" option, allowing participants to help with tasks before and after running their chosen distance. Group discounts are available, and a referral discount is offered.
