Event Overview

The Big Hurt is a multi-sport race with four distinct legs. Participants can compete solo in the Iron Division or as part of a relay team. A feature of the event is that all transitions take place at the same location, Pebble Beach Park on the waterfront in downtown Port Angeles, Washington.

Race Legs

The race consists of the following four segments:

  • A 15-mile mountain bike leg in the foothills above Port Angeles.
  • A 2.6-mile kayak leg in Port Angeles Harbor.
  • A 30-mile road bike leg west from Port Angeles, crossing the Elwha River and visiting Freshwater Bay and Kelly Ridge roads.
  • A 10K run on the Olympic Discovery Trail along the waterfront.

The event is divided into an Iron Division for solo participants and a Team Division for relay teams.

Iron Division categories include general, Masters (age 50+), and non-binary awards. Awards are given to the top three finishers in men's, women's, men's masters, women's masters, and non-binary categories.

  • Tandem Team (2 members)
  • First Responder Team (3-4 members, all retired or active military, police, fire, or EMS)
  • High School Team (3-4 members, students aged 15+, may include one adult)
