9th Annual Battle by the Brook
The Battle by the Brook is an adventure race held at YMCA Camp Shady Brook in Deckers, Colorado. This 2026 event serves as a fundraiser to support children attending camp. The competition is a USARA-sanctioned event and requires either an annual USARA membership or a single-event license.
Participants navigate through various endurance disciplines including orienteering, cross-country running or hiking, mountain biking, and paddling. The race provides necessary watercraft for the paddling sections. Athletes receive a swag bag and a race gift, and the event features a vendor prize raffle, a campfire with smores, and a post-race cookout.
The event offers two main race categories:
- Competitive Race: A course of approximately 20 miles involving mountain biking on single track and dirt roads, hiking with elevation gain, and navigation.
- Family Race: A shorter course of approximately 6 miles with the option to use mountain bikes or complete the distance on foot.
Competitive teams are composed of 1 to 4 athletes. Family divisions allow for 2 to 6 people per team and are categorized by those using bicycles and those without. Awards are presented to the top team in each division. Maps and passports are provided to all teams for navigation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
