Event

The Azalea Classic takes place in May in University Park, Maryland. The event includes a USATF-sanctioned 5K, a 1-mile Challenge Run, and the Val Creighton 1K Family Fun Run. It is organized by the University Park Elementary School Parent Teacher Association. All proceeds benefit programs at the school. Dogs and strollers are allowed. Shirts are provided and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis during packet pick-up.

Logistics

The event venue is University Park Elementary School, 4315 Underwood Street, University Park, MD 20782. Packet pick-up is scheduled the day before and on race day; UPES students may pick up shirts during the school day but may not pick up for family members. Registration pricing for the 5K increases as the event approaches; the 1K and 1-mile fees remain lower during the registration period and increase on race day. Group registrations of four or more receive a $5 discount per person. Family sponsorships that include a name on the back of the shirt require a donation of $120 or more and have an early cutoff date. Street closures are planned along the route beginning in the morning. Suggested parking areas include the 4300 block of Underwood Street, the 6500-6600 block of 44th Avenue, the 4200 block of Tuckerman Street, and 41st Avenue near Queens Chapel Road. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
