Route, checkpoints and requirements
The route passes through Rivington, Anglezarke and Turton Moors and visits local landmarks including Lever Park, Rivington Pike and Winter Hill (about 1500 ft, the highest point on the walk). The course crosses reservoirs and moorland and passes features such as Turton and Entwistle Reservoir, Darwen Moors and Darwen Tower, Roddlesworth Woods, Great Hill, White Coppice, Anglezarke Reservoir, Yarrow Reservoir and Upper Rivington Reservoir before finishing in Rivington.
Refreshments are available at named checkpoints: the short route has a refreshment point after 9.6 miles at Slipper Lowe; the long route has refreshment points after 10.1 miles at Entwistle Barn and after 18 miles at Slipper Lowe. Entrants must carry specified equipment for winter moorland conditions, including a map, compass, whistle, torch, waterproofs, first aid kit, food, drink and a mug. Random equipment checks are applied and entrants without a mug will not be served drinks. Retirements are accepted at checkpoints only and tallies must be handed in; failure to visit checkpoints in order may lead to disqualification.
