Women Can Marathon
The Women Can Marathon is a women's only running event held in East Devon. The 2027 edition commemorates the 60th anniversary of Kathrine Switzer becoming the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon. The event features multiple distances that take place predominantly on off-road terrain, including trails and footpaths.
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- Marathon: A circular route starting and finishing at Sideshore, Exmouth, passing through the Exe Estuary, East Devon Way, and the Southwest Coast Path.
- Half Marathon: A point-to-point race starting in Tipton St John and following the second half of the marathon course to finish in Exmouth.
- 10km: A point-to-point route starting in Budleigh Salterton and following the Southwest Coast Path to the finish line in Exmouth.
The courses include sections of the Southwest Coast Path and the Otter Valley. Due to some narrow sections on the footpaths, runners using trekking poles are asked to be mindful of others. The event allows the use of bone-conducting headphones, though traditional in-ear or over-ear headphones are not permitted for safety reasons.
The marathon distance has a time limit of 9 hours, while the half marathon has a cut-off of 7 hours. In addition to the races, the event schedule includes a pre-race dinner on Saturday evening and family activities on Sunday. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
