General Overview
The Wings for Life World Run at the Virginia Beach Boardwalk is a global running event that follows a unique format. Instead of a traditional stationary finish line, participants compete against a Virtual Catcher Car. This event is open to both runners and wheelchair participants, who all start simultaneously across the world. The race continues until the Virtual Catcher Car passes the participant, at which point their race is complete.
Course details
The event takes place along the Virginia Beach boardwalk. The track begins at Neptune Park, located at the Neptune Statue on 31st Street. From this starting point, the route heads south along the boardwalk toward a turnaround point before looping back to the park. This course layout allows participants to complete loops until they are caught by the virtual chase.
Competition Format
The race features a moving finish line in the form of a Virtual Catcher Car managed through a mobile application. The car starts its pursuit 30 minutes after the initial race start at a speed of 14 km/h. It gradually increases its pace at set intervals until the final participant has been overtaken.
