White Mountains Triathlon

The White Mountains Triathlon is a multi-distance triathlon held in Franconia Notch State Park with the race venue centered at Echo Lake and Cannon Mountain. Swim, bike, and run courses start or finish at Echo Lake Beach and use local roads and paved recreation trails.

Event distances:

  • Sprint: 0.25 mi swim, 13.2 mi bike, 3.2 mi run
  • Olympic: 1500 m swim, 40 km bike, 6.1 mi run
  • Half: 1.2 mi swim, 56 mi bike, 11.8 mi run

All swims take place in Echo Lake using marked looped courses. Wetsuits are mandatory for all participants; wetsuit styles may be full length, sleeveless, or short provided the torso is covered, and wetsuit thickness must comply with USAT limits. Olympic and Half swimmers complete their first loop and remain in the water to begin the second loop.

Bike courses follow state routes through the White Mountains, include long descents into Franconia Village, and feature a King of the Mountain climb on Rt 141 / Butterhill Rd at specified mile markers for each distance. Sprint cyclists should plan to be self sufficient as there are no bike aid stations on that course. Olympic and Half bike courses provide aid stations with water and Gatorade and offer bottle exchange.

Run courses use paved recreation trails in Franconia Notch State Park, loop multiple times depending on distance, and finish beachside at Echo Lake. Run aid stations provide water, Gatorade, energy chews, and bananas.

Logistics notes: packet pick-up is available Friday evening and on race morning with photo ID required; the event is USAT sanctioned so competitors must have an annual membership or a one-day license. Athlete parking is located at the Cannon Mountain ski lots, spectator parking is routed to the main lodge lots and to a backside access via the tramway exit; pets are not allowed in the state park. Post-race food and beer are provided at the beach finish, digital race photos are posted a few business days after the event, and finishers receive a finisher video link shortly after the race. Awards are available at the awards tent and include a handcrafted wood coaster. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
