St. Patrick's Day Tradition in Kansas City
The Westport St. Patrick's Day Run is a long-standing athletic tradition in Kansas City, Missouri, dating back to 1979. The event features multiple distances centered around the Westport area, specifically starting south of the intersection of Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. Participants typically wear green attire to celebrate the holiday, accompanied by the sound of bagpipes at the venue.
Available distances include:
- 4 Mile Run
- 1 Mile Walk
- Little Leprechaun Run (approximately 1 block for children)
The 4 Mile Run involves a course with a water stop located at the 1.75-mile mark, which participants pass again at the 2.25-mile mark. The race uses disposable chip timing attached to the bib. For safety and insurance reasons, the use of earbuds, motorized vehicles, roller blades, bicycles, or dogs is not permitted on the course. Strollers are allowed but must start behind the field of runners.
The Little Leprechaun Run is held specifically for children and covers a distance of approximately one block. All participants in this category receive a cotton t-shirt, a gift bag, and a finisher medal.
A Finish Line Festival follows the races, featuring light snacks, vendor booths, and a medical tent. All participants across all events receive a finisher medal. Awards are presented to the top three overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three finishers in various age groups ranging from 9 and under to 80 and over.
