About the race
The West Highland Way Race is an established trail ultra-marathon first held in 1985 along the long-distance route between Milngavie (just north of Glasgow) and Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. The event is limited to 300 runners each year; the relatively small field is intended to help preserve the event's friendly character. The 2027 event will be the 41st running.
Organisers maintain published materials for participants and crews, including race rules, runner and support crew guidance, checkpoint information, toilets, and map and GPX files. Results and race history are also recorded and available for past editions. Volunteer information and a race shop are part of the event infrastructure.
Registration for the 2027 ballot opens on 1 October and closes on 14 October; ballot results are announced before the end of October. The event issues updates for crews and competitors where necessary, for example notifications about road closures and alternative routes. A nutrition partnership for 2027 was announced in October 2026. The race holds a licence issued by the national athletics body, Scottish Athletics.
