West Highland Way Race

The West Highland Way Race is an established long distance trail ultra that first took place in 1985. The event follows the long distance trail between Milngavie, just north of Glasgow, and Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. It draws runners from outside Scotland as well as locally and is described as one of the world’s longest established ultra-marathons.

Entry is limited to 300 runners each year, and the relatively small field size is noted as helping to preserve the event's friendly nature. The 40th running took place in 2026 and the 41st edition is scheduled for 19 June 2027. Registration for the 2027 ballot is set to open on 1 October 2026 and remain open until 14 October 2026, with ballot results announced before the end of October.

Organisers publish practical race information including race rules, checkpoint locations and cut offs, map and GPX files, toilet locations, medical guidance for runners, and volunteer information. Live results are published via SportIdent. The race operates under a licence issued by Scottish Athletics. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
