West Highland Way Challenge Race

The West Highland Way Challenge Race is an annual ultra trail event that follows the West Highland Way from Fort William to Milngavie. The main race is 96 miles with approximately 14,700 ft of ascent. The course is point-to-point in a southerly direction and is route marked; over 100 reflectors have been placed at junctions to help with navigation. Organisers provide food and drink at nine locations along the route and will transport competitors who withdraw at those check points or at road crossings to the finish. Competitors may race unsupported if they prefer. Race trackers are issued so locations can be monitored during the event. Entrants may hand in two drop bags to be delivered to Bridge of Orchy (about 35 miles) and Rowardennan (about 68 miles), plus a finish bag for Milngavie; used drop bags are returned to the finish.

Ben Nevis variant, cut offs and prizes

A variant adds an ascent of Ben Nevis, extending the course to 107 miles with roughly 19,175 ft of ascent. Entry to that variant requires prior completion of the West Highland Way or an equivalent event in under 30 hours. Cut-off times for the main race are based on an average walking speed of 2.7 mph (covering the course in 35 hours). All finishers receive a boxed crystal goblet; the first three finishers receive trophies. Competitors who complete the main route in under 24 hours receive a commemorative keyring and membership of the "WHW In A Day" club. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
