Event overview
The Great Glen Ultra Marathon is a solo, unsupported ultra running event along the Great Glen Way from Corpach/Fort William to Inverness. The route is approximately 72 miles (about 114 km) with around 8,500 ft of climb and carries UTMB qualification points. The course is fully waymarked, follows the Great Glen Way blue posts and uses the High Route option for parts of the route. The terrain includes canal towpaths, forestry paths, tracks and some short road sections.
Route, checkpoints and rules
The race has marshaled checkpoints roughly every 10 miles and allows numbered drop bags at six points. A separate water stop is located at Grotaig (about 49 miles). Checkpoints and cut-offs are:
- Clunes - 10.5 miles - cut off 2 hours 45 minutes
- Laggan Locks - 20 miles - cut off 4 hours 30 minutes
- Fort Augustus - 31 miles - cut off 7 hours 30 minutes
- Invermoriston - 40 miles - cut off 10 hours
- Drumnadrochit - 54.5 miles - cut off 14 hours 30 minutes
- Loch Laide - 62 miles - cut off 18 hours
- Inverness Athletics Stadium (finish) - 72 miles - cut off 22 hours
Runners must carry mandatory kit throughout the event, including a foil blanket, a working mobile phone and a means to carry at least 1 litre of water. The organiser expects entrants to have prior endurance experience (examples given include previous ultras of 35-40 miles or documented runs of 40-50 miles). Support crews are allowed only at Fort Augustus, Invermoriston, Drumnadrochit and the finish. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
