Welland Open Water Swim and SwimRun Challenge
The Welland Open Water Swim and SwimRun Challenge takes place at the Welland Community Boathouse in Ontario. This annual event, now in its 9th season, utilizes the waters of the Welland Recreational Canal for swimming and the adjacent shore trails for running. The event offers two primary disciplines: open water swimming and SwimRun.
Open water swimmers compete on a standard 1 km diamond-shaped course. Participants can select from the following distances:
- 1 km (one lap)
- 3 km (three laps)
- 5 km (five laps)
The Mudskipper SwimRun Challenge features two multi-stage distances:
- 7.5 km: Consists of 5 stages, including 3 swim stages (totaling 2.5 km) and 2 run stages (totaling 5 km) on flat trails.
- 10 km: Follows the shorter course with an additional 2.3 km run and a final short swim to the finish line.
Participants are identified via ink numbering on their upper back or shoulder and mandatory color-coded swim caps provided by the organizer. Water temperatures typically range between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Facilities at the Community Centre include washrooms, and food is provided for participants. Medals are awarded to those who complete their respective challenges. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
