Watlington XC 10 km : event description
The Watlington XC 10 km is a cross country race in its 17th year. The course follows a section of the ancient Ridgeway trail before climbing steeply into the wooded Chiltern Hills. Runners descend sharply down Shirburn Hill with views over the Oxfordshire plain, move through a fast track in beech woods, then face a steep ascent of Watlington Hill. The final section is a fast, twisting single track descent that returns to the Ridgeway and completes the course; careful foot placement is needed on this technical section.
Runners must be 16 or over. The event is licensed by the TRA and is run under UK Athletics rules. The organiser describes the event as relaxed and run in the spirit of fell running, with a sense of camaraderie and without chip timing.
Registration and race headquarters are at The Spire & Spoke on Hill Road in Watlington. Registration is based at the Spire & Spoke and the race start is at the top of Hill Road; allow about ten minutes to reach the start from the registration point.
Prizes include champagne for the fastest male and fastest female finisher. A free drink at the Spire & Spoke is available to everyone wearing a race number after the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
