Waterman Eco-Challenge and Summer Safe Ocean State 5K/10K
Founded in 2011, the Waterman Eco-Challenge is an annual multisport festival held at Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett. The event serves as a fundraiser for various charitable causes, including drowning prevention, cancer support, cardiac health, and coastal sustainability. It is notably New England's only open-water swim meet dual-sanctioned by USA Swimming and U.S. Masters Swimming.
Participants can choose from a wide variety of individual and multi-discipline events:
- 5K Road Race (Run or Walk)
- 10K Road Race (Run)
- 1 Mile or 5K Swim
- 400 Meter Kids Swim
- 3 Mile or 6 Mile Paddle
- Eco-Challenger: 5K Run + 1 Mile Swim + 3 Mile Paddle
- Ultimate Challenger: 10K Run + 5K Swim + 6 Mile Paddle
The ocean swim portion includes individual and cumulative time relay competitions, as well as team points competitions. Swimmers can participate in either non-wetsuit divisions, which are eligible for awards, or wetsuit divisions. All swimmers aged 12 and under must provide a coach attestation form.
The festival also features a public event area and provides access to state beach facilities. Parking is available at the beach for a fee, with rates managed by the State of Rhode Island. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
