Wandering Moose : October 10

Wandering Moose is a trail running event at Myra Adventure Park. Distances offered are:

  • 35 km
  • 25 km
  • 12 km
  • 1 km (kids race)

The kids race is about 1 km, not timed, and typically sees children aged 5 to 10; children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult. The kids entry fee is $5 and proceeds go to the Canadian Mental Health Association - Georgia's Wish. Prizing for adult races is handed out as runners finish; there is no formal award ceremony. Lunch is included with race entry and is selected via the tear-away portion of the race bib.

Courses, aid and logistics

Course features include sections on the historic KVR at about 1250 m, single track through moss and fern forest, technical trails with roots, rocks and creek crossings, and long descents such as Myra Bailout and Angel Springs. Ascent/descent figures:

  • 12 km: ascent 204 m, descent 672 m
  • 25 km: ascent 510 m, descent 1000 m
  • 35 km: ascent 940 m, descent 1420 m

There are aid stations with water, sports drink, gels, fruit, chips, pickles and Coke; runners must check in at aid stations and show bibs on the front of the body. The 35 km and 25 km distances have two cut-off points expressed as allowed completion times (for example the 35 km allows about 4.5 hours to reach 23 km and about 7.5 hours to complete the course). Parking is available at the finish area and along June Springs Road; there is no parking at the KVR start. Shuttles transport runners from the Adventure Park to the KVR (approximate transport time 20 minutes). Recommended items include a lightweight jacket, emergency blanket, warm layer, cell phone, bear spray and a reusable cup. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
