Event Overview
The Victor Pack Burro Race is a 7.3-mile pack burro race held in Victor, Colorado. It takes place during the Victor Gold Rush Days festival. The course starts and finishes on Victor Avenue in the historic Cripple Creek and Victor Mining District.
Course Details
The route features 1,100 feet of elevation gain with varied terrain including ups and downs and uneven footing. It passes by historic mine sites and offers scenic views. Runners are advised to study the course map beforehand, as several intersecting trails and roads exist along the well-marked route.
Participant Information
The event involves a team of one runner and one burro (donkey). Each burro must be equipped with a packsaddle containing prospecting gear: a pick, gold pan, and shovel. The burro is controlled via a lead rope attached to its halter. Specific rules govern equipment, team composition, and animal handling. Bib pick-up and day-of-race registration begins in the morning, with the race start in the afternoon.
On-Site Activities & Amenities
All racers receive a finisher's prize (a commemorative bolo tie), a free lunch, and free race photos. Cash prizes and hiking sticks are awarded to top finishers. Additional special awards are given. An awards ceremony is held in the afternoon. Spectators can enjoy a mini-donkey race for kids, a poop pick-up contest, and "Virtual Donkey Bingo." The Victor Elks Lodge provides a free meal for participants and volunteers, with meals available for purchase by spectators.
