Victor Pack Burro Race
The Victor Pack Burro Race is an annual event held in the historic Cripple Creek and Victor Mining District. It takes place during Gold Rush Days, a long-standing festival in Colorado. The race follows a 7.3-mile course that begins and ends on Victor Avenue in the center of Victor. The route features approximately 1,100 feet of elevation gain and includes a variety of terrain with uneven footing, intersecting trails, and views of historic mine sites.
Participants must compete with a burro to enter the event. This sport follows specific regulations regarding equipment and animal welfare:
- 7.3 miles: Course includes a packsaddle with a pick, gold pan, and shovel.
In accordance with official rules, the runner and burro must remain together as a team throughout the duration of the race. The burro must be handled using a single lead rope no longer than 15 feet attached to a halter. While the runner may lead or follow the animal, the burro's nose must cross the finish line first to determine the finishing position. Riding the burro is strictly prohibited.
The event includes a finishers prize, race photos, and a meal provided after the competition. Awards are presented to top finishers, and special recognition is given for the "Last Ass" and "Nicest Ass." Additional activities such as a mini-donkey race for children and a parade often coincide with the race day. Parking is available for both spectators and participants, with specific areas designated for trailers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
