High-Altitude Trail Running in Palmer
The Veins of Gold is a point-point mountain race located in Palmer, Alaska. The course begins at the Government Peak Recreation Area parking lot and follows the race trail to the summit of Government Peak. Participants then traverse the ridgeline toward April Bowl and descend to the Summit Lake parking lot. The final section follows the road to the finish at Independence Mine and Hatcher Pass Lodge.
The event features a single distance:
- 8 miles with approximately 5,000 feet of vertical gain.
The terrain consists of a variety of surfaces, including steep uphill trails, loose rock, shale, tundra, and dirt roads. A small portion of the final stretch is paved. Due to the backcountry mountain environment, participants must adhere to strict gear requirements, which include carrying at least 500 calories of food, 500 ml of water, a light jacket, a hat, and gloves. Additional recommended equipment includes bear spray, a space blanket, and a whistle.
Participants must be at least 16 years old to register. For safety reasons, the race includes a two-hour cutoff time at the top of Government Peak. All runners are required to sign a waiver confirming they have traversed the entire course at least once before race day. Three aid stations are positioned along the route to provide water and fuel, though runners are expected to be self-sufficient. A portion of each registration fee is donated to the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
