Event Overview
The Skeetawk Scramble is a multi-day mountain running event held at the Skeetawk Ski Area within the Hatcher Pass Recreation Area in Palmer, Alaska. The event takes place in the southwest Talkeetna Mountains, featuring a landscape of steep climbs, ridgelines, and technical terrain including chunky rock, large slabs, and single-track trails. Participants run through various local landmarks such as Frostbite Ridge, Government Peak, and Hatch Peak.
The weekend includes several distinct mountain races:
- Skeetawk Skyline Scramble (37 km): A technical course with approximately 11,500 feet of elevation gain. This route follows newly developed trails up Frostbite Ridge to Government Peak, traverses toward Hatcher Pass, and includes climbs to Marmot and Gold Cord Lake.
- Skeetawk 12K: A looped course featuring 3,600 feet of elevation gain and loss. The route ascends Frostbite Ridge to Government Peak before descending via Halibut Tail.
- Skeetawk VK (Vertical Kilometer): A 3-mile uphill-only race with 3,000+ feet of elevation gain, following the trail on Frostbite Ridge.
- Youth Scramble (1 km): An uphill-only course for participants aged 14 and under, gaining approximately 1,000 feet of elevation.
Runners have the option to participate in individual races or combine events through multi-race entries like the Trifecta, which includes the VK, the 12K, and the Scramble. The Skeetawk Skyline Scramble serves as an official US Skyrunning certified course. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
