Vale Coastal Trail Races
The Vale Coastal Races are trail running events taking place along the Vale of Glamorgan coastline. The event offers three different linear distances that follow the marked Wales Coast Path. Participants navigate primarily along clifftops and coastal trails, passing numerous bays, rock formations, and rural landscapes.
The courses available include:
- 32.5 miles (Ultra) - A linear route covering the entire coast of the Vale of Glamorgan from Penarth Pier to Ogmore-by-sea.
- 18.5 miles (Trail 18.5) - A run starting at Porthkerry Park in Barry that joins the main coastal path.
- 10 miles (Trail 10) - A shorter course starting at Llantwit Major beach that follows the final section of the longer routes.
The routes are primarily self-navigation, following the existing Wales Coast Path signage. Additional markers and flags are placed in specific sections where the path may be difficult to follow. Manned checkpoints are situated along the courses, with five stations for the Ultra, three for the 18.5 mile race, and two for the 10 mile race. These stations provide water, energy drinks, and various snacks.
As these are linear races, finishers end at Ogmore-by-sea. Optional coach transport is available to take participants from the finish area to their respective start lines. Runners must carry a compulsory kit, and a 10-hour time limit is in place for the Ultra distance, while the shorter races have a limit of 7 hours and 15 minutes.
