Event overview
The Tuscobia Winter Ultra is a human-powered winter event on the Tuscobia and Wild Rivers State Trails in Northern Wisconsin. Participants may choose to run, bike, or ski. The event offers two distance options:
- 80-mile one-way
- 160-mile out-and-back
The 160-mile distance requires completion of a qualifying event and serves as a qualifier for the Iditarod Trail Invitational. Organizers also provide one 160-mile winner with a paid guaranteed entry to the ITI.
Format, rules and course
Both distances require specific gear and are largely self-supported with minimal checkpoint support. Outside assistance from family, friends, or strangers is not allowed. Participants are expected to follow checkpoint rules and carry required lights that meet the event list. A gear check is mandatory and bibs are issued only after passing gear inspection. A pre-event meeting is mandatory for all participants to review course updates and rules.
The course is marked and GPX route files are provided for the 80-mile and 160-mile options. Course routing can use trails and frozen lakes in some years; changes are announced when conditions require alternative sections or road routing.
Registration and entry
Registration is by application within posted windows. Entry fees reported for one event cycle were $150 for the 80-mile and $200 for the 160-mile, with higher late-entry fees if additional spots open. Entries are nonrefundable and nontransferable. Live tracking at checkpoints is provided during the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
