Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk - Athens, GA
This event is a 5K (3.1 miles) run and walk on October 4, 2026 in downtown Athens, Georgia. The Tunnel to Towers Run & Walk Series was created to honor the life and death of a New York City firefighter who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after strapping on gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers. This is the first year the series takes place in Athens.
The start/finish area is on West Washington Street adjacent to Athens City Hall at 301 College Avenue. Packet pickup is scheduled the morning of the event from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. Public parking is available throughout downtown Athens, including parking decks, surface lots, and on-street spaces.
Online registration details in the source show category-specific fees and dates: Adult $25, First Responders & Military $20, Youth (13–17) $10, Child (12 & under) $5, and a PCG employee virtual category at no fee. Most categories open registration on August 5, 2026 and close August 12, 2026; the PCG employee virtual category has a later closing date.
Participants must display a bib on the front of their outermost garment. Strollers and wheelchairs are permitted; firefighter turnout gear and military backpacks are also permitted. A water station is available on course and at the finish. The event currently is not timed. An Emergency Medical Service team will be on site and radio communication will be available along the course. Donations are accepted for six weeks after the event.
