Touws 9km Circuit Hike and Row
This event combines a 9 km circular hike with a canoe experience on the Touw River, based at Fairy Knowe in Wilderness, Western Cape. The hike follows a well maintained trail through forest and alongside the river, with approximately 70 m of elevation gain and an expected duration of about 2.5 to 3 hours. The route passes Wilderness Beach, where dolphin and whale sightings are possible.
After the hike participants continue by canoe along calm waterways toward the river mouth. Canoes are supplied with large splash proof buckets for valuables such as cameras, snacks and daypacks. The event fee is R450 per person and includes SANParks conservation fees, canoe rental and a guided experience.
The morning concludes with a shared lunch at Fairy Knowe Hotel. The organiser requires a compulsory emergency kit for all hikes; recommended items include a lightweight hydration pack or backpack, 1 to 2 litres of water, sunscreen, a hat, suitable footwear for hiking or beach use, trail snacks, a lightweight windproof jacket or fleece, and, depending on conditions, a beanie and gloves. A waterproof jacket and layered clothing are advised. Communication and logistical details are handled via a group messaging channel created for participants.
