Event Overview
The Toughest Alive: the Summer Hourglass is a multi-format endurance challenge. It features four distinct event categories: Run, Ruck, Loaded Carry, and Hybrid Athlete. Each follows a "last person standing" format where participants complete rounds against a shrinking time limit.
Format and Course
The event uses a unique timing structure. The first round has a 30-minute time cap. With each successful round, the time cap decreases by one minute. Participants must complete their required task within the cap to earn a start in the next round. The event ends when only one participant remains in each category.
The course loops vary by category:
- Run: a 2-mile loop.
- Ruck: a 1-mile loop completed with a weighted pack (35 lb for men, 20 lb for women; participants bring their own).
- Loaded Carry: an 800-meter sandbag carry (60 lb for men, 45 lb for women).
- Hybrid Athlete: a 2-mile run loop plus 10 burpees per round.
Location and Logistics
The event takes place at the Crevasse–Moraine Trailhead in Palmer, Alaska. Trail shoes are recommended. Participants should bring their own water, electrolytes, sun protection, and weather-appropriate layers. Ruck participants must supply their own pack and weights to meet the standard.
Awards
Awards are given to the top finisher in each category. The top five participants in each category receive an invitation to a subsequent event called the "Ultimate Hourglass" in Anchorage, Alaska. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
