Event Overview
The Valley Thaw Out Races take place in Palmer, Alaska, starting and finishing at Pyrah's Pioneer Peak Farm on Bodenburg Loop. This event serves as a fundraiser for the MatSu Running Club, a non-profit organization that provides coached workouts and group runs. The race features five distinct distances to accommodate various age groups and physical abilities:
- Marathon: A course involving Bodenburg Loop, the Glenn Highway bike path, Airport Road, and Outer Springer Loop (Ages 14+).
- Half Marathon: A route following Bodenburg Loop and the bike path with a turnaround at Virginia Ave (Ages 10+).
- 10K: A loop using Bodenburg Loop and the local bike path (Ages 7+).
- 5K: An out-and-back course located on Bodenburg Loop (Ages 7+).
- Kids 1K Run: A loop around the farmlands of Pyrah's Pioneer Peak Farm (Ages 10 and under).
Course Conditions
The courses remain open to public traffic. Participants run on the road shoulder against the flow of traffic. Because of these conditions, the use of strollers and dogs is prohibited on all courses. Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of their race. Race volunteers are positioned at crossings and blind corners to assist participants.
Registration and Participation
The event has a total participant cap of 250 runners across the Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K divisions. Finishers in these categories receive a medal, a sticker, and a race shirt if registered by the specified deadline in March. Kids Run participants receive a finisher's token and a sticker. There is no day-of-race registration, and the event does not offer refunds or deferments. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
