Through the Smoke Road Race
Through the Smoke is a community road race presented by the Mandan Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4984. The event is based at the Mandan Firefighters Training Grounds, 629 24th Ave. SE, Mandan, ND, and follows a route through the Lakewood area of Mandan. The program includes multiple race options and a virtual race.
Distances and formats:
- 10K competitive race
- 5K competitive race
- 5K Family Fun (dogs and strollers welcome)
- Kids 0.5 miles for ages 10 and under
- Virtual race option to run or walk from anywhere
The starting area includes a Kids Fire Safety Fun Zone with hands-on activities and education for children. Packet pickup is available the day before at Signature Events, 401 West Main, Mandan, and on race day at the event site.
Registration for competitive races includes a swag bag, an event T-shirt (size/availability not guaranteed for late registrants), a race bib, a finisher medal, and professional timing provided by Pickle Events with results published by the timing company. Family Fun 5K registrations include a group swag bag, one event T-shirt per registered participant, a multi-person discount when signed up together, and will not be professionally timed.
Awards are given to first-place finishers in each competitive age group for both male and female divisions. Competitive age groups are 19 & under, 20–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, and 60 & over. All registered competitive 5K and 10K participants receive finisher medals.
Proceeds support purchase of fitness equipment and advanced training opportunities for Mandan firefighters, intended to support physical performance and mental resilience for crews serving the community. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
