Thornton Turkey Trot
The Thornton Turkey Trot is an annual running and walking event held in Glenwood, Illinois. Established in 1968, it is recognized as the oldest turkey trot in the state. The event takes place on Thanksgiving morning at 183rd and Cottage Grove Ave, offering a tradition that has spanned over five decades.
Participants can choose from various event categories:
- 5k (3.1 Miles) Community Run
- 1 Mile Kids Race (for participants in 8th grade and younger)
- 1 Mile Community Walk
The event includes a High School Team competition. This division requires at least three athletes from the same school to form a team for scoring purposes, with separate categories for boys and girls teams.
All finishers receive a medal. Performance awards are presented to the top three male and female participants in several age groups, ranging from 14 and under to 80 and older. Participants can collect their race packets at Running for Kicks the day before the event or at the site on the morning of the race. Proceeds from the event benefit the Winged Foot Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides athletic equipment and academic programs to student athletes in the Chicago area.
