The Squirrel Trail Run
The Squirrel Trail Run is a point-to-point trail event of about 20 kilometers on the Mountains to Sea Trail in Wake Forest, NC. The route runs from the gate at Falls Dam to the Bayleaf Church Road trail crossing and lists the meeting address as 12101 Old Falls of Neuse Road.
The course is described in four sections: Dam to Raven Ridge (3.5 miles), Raven Ridge to Possum Track (2.5 miles), Possum Track to Possum Track aka Awesome Possum (3 miles), and Possum Track to Bayleaf Church Road (3 miles). Participants pass main roads twice, at Raven Ridge and at Possum Track, where the route follows the roadside to the next trailhead. A midcourse aid station with water is located at the end of Possum Track Road and there is support at the finish. Runners are instructed to follow the white blaze of the Mountains to Sea Trail and may use mapped routes on Strava, FarOut, or AllTrails for guidance.
This event is presented as a free, informal "Fat Ass" run; donations are appreciated. Entries are capped at 100 for 2027 and parking is limited, with an additional large lot across the street from the Falls dam gate. The event is unofficial, rain or shine, listed as a Strava Challenge, and described as run at the participant's own risk. An out-and-back option called the Super Squirrel is available.
Sir Walter Running, a Raleigh-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, organizes the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
