The Springs Downhill Mile
The Springs Downhill Mile is a point-to-point running event held in Colorado Springs. The course takes place on a hard-packed dirt trail within Monument Valley Park. As the name suggests, the route features a downhill profile with a -0.83% grade, resulting in a total elevation loss of 44 feet. The race is recognized as the RRCA Colorado 1 Mile State Championship.
The course begins just South of the Popcycle Bridge and concludes before the Uintah Bridge. Due to the nature of the path, participants are started in heats of approximately 10 athletes. These heats are organized based on predicted finish times and released at short intervals to manage course capacity.
Most participants are chip-timed. However, the first heats for men and women, consisting of the ten fastest entrants for each gender, are timed based on the gun start. Water is provided at the finish line, and participants are required to follow a specific walking route back to the park after finishing to prevent collisions with other runners still on the course.
