Nielson Challenge : Colorado Springs
The Nielson Challenge is a recurring 2 mile running event held at North Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs. It takes place on the first Saturday of each month and uses the same 2 mile course each month to allow comparison of performance over time.
Each participant races against a personal handicap time. A base time is established the first time a person runs the event; that base time is used to generate a handicap based on previous results from the last two years. The handicap calculation is designed to favor beginning and slower runners, while also providing established runners a consistent way to check fitness. Winners are determined by who improves the most relative to their handicap time.
Registration is required for most entrants. Participants who hold a "forever bib" are pre-registered each month and do not need to register again.
At each monthly race, the top improver over their handicap receives a Nielson shirt. The shirts are donated by a local screen printing studio, EON Studios. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
