Nielson Challenge
The Nielson Challenge is a monthly running event held in North Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs. This event features a single distance:
- 2 Miles
Participants follow the same 2 mile course each month, allowing for a consistent measurement of physical fitness under similar conditions. The competition is structured around a handicap system rather than a traditional first-to-the-finish format. This system uses previous race results from the last two years to calculate a specific handicap time for each runner.
First-time participants establish a base time during their initial run, which serves as the foundation for their future handicap. The underlying algorithm is designed to favor individuals who show significant time improvements. This structure particularly benefits those who are beginning a training regimen or slower runners who demonstrate progress through consistent practice.
Established and faster runners can utilize the recurring nature of the event to track their performance levels over time. The monthly frequency provides a regular opportunity to assess running health on a familiar route. The individual who shows the greatest improvement relative to their assigned handicap time is recognized for their achievement. Registration is generally required, though individuals with permanent identification numbers are automatically included in the monthly roster.
