Nielson Two Mile Challenge
The Nielson Two Mile Challenge is a monthly, timed event held on a flat 2 mile course in North Monument Valley Park. The course uses an elongated loop for the first mile and an out-and-back for the second mile. The first mile runs north on the middle trail and returns south on the main trail parallel to the creek. The second mile proceeds south on the main trail and then returns north.
Each runner establishes a base time on their first appearance. That base time is used to generate a personal handicap time via a specific algorithm that favors beginning and slower runners. In subsequent races participants are measured against their handicap time; the competitor who improves the most relative to their handicap is declared the monthly winner. Results and handicap times are updated monthly after the latest race data are processed.
Registration is handled online through RunSignup and there is no race day registration. Pre-registration closes the Friday before each race. There is no entry fee; a free lunch is provided after the event. At each monthly race the top improver receives a Nielson shirt, with shirts donated by EON Studios.
