The Snake 10-Mile Trail Race
The eighth annual Snake 10-Mile Trail Race takes place at Shelter 2 in Overlook Park at Clinton Lake in Lawrence, Kansas. The course is named for its winding layout and runs through rugged trails and old-growth forest on the north shore of the lake. The layout is described as unique for Clinton Lake.
The event includes a midway aid station staffed by fellow trail runners and a post-race watermelon feast for runners, volunteers, families and friends. Entrants receive a unique "snake name" as part of a special safety arrangement with the local snake population; runners who encounter snakes are asked to identify themselves with that name, give the animal a wide berth, and avoid handling snakes.
Guidelines for participants aim to protect runners and the park environment. Runners must stay on marked trails and avoid littering; those seen littering may be disqualified. A sign in/sign out sheet will record each runner's presence. Dogs may run on leash if they can handle the distance and heat. Jogging strollers and other wheeled vehicles are not permitted on the course. No alcohol or smoking is allowed on the course, and trails remain open to the public. Any runner under 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and all runners must carry a container for hydration.
The published entry fee is $52. Dues-paying Lawrence Trail Hawks receive a $10 discount when using their Runsignup account associated with their membership. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
