Event overview
The Ridgeway Challenge is an 86-mile (139 km) point-to-point trail running race along the entire length of The Ridgeway National Trail. The route runs from Ivinghoe Beacon in Hertfordshire to the Avebury Stones in Wiltshire. The next edition is scheduled for 30 May 2026. The event allows 28 hours to complete the course, with total ascent listed as 6,060 ft (approximately 1,850 m). Maximum field size is 250 runners and minimum age is 20. The race holds TRA license 7125, is held under UKA rules, and is listed as a UTMB World Series Index Race.
Route, navigation and support
The route uses the permanent Ridgeway National Trail signage, with additional race markers where needed. Open GPS tracking is provided and a GPX file, printable map and online route views are available. There are eight checkpoints at the following approximate distances: CP1 Wendover (10.1 miles / 16.3 km), CP2 Whiteleaf (17.3 miles / 27.9 km), CP3 Aston Rowant (25.5 miles / 41.1 km), CP4 Nuffield (34 miles / 54.8 km), CP5 South Stoke (41.7 miles / 67.1 km), CP6 West Ilsley (52 miles / 83.7 km), CP7 Uffington (64.6 miles / 104 km) and CP8 Ogbourne St George (76.4 miles / 123 km). Checkpoints supply fluids, Precision Fuel & Hydration products, snacks, fruit and pre-made sandwiches. Hot food is available at CP5 and CP8; hot water is provided at CP3, CP5, CP6, CP7 and CP8.
Entry, rules and logistics
Standard entry is priced from £172 (£170 affiliated) with a late entry tier at £182 (£180 affiliated). Withdrawal more than four weeks before the race receives a 90% credit valid for two years. Crews may support runners off-checkpoint locations; crews are not permitted at checkpoints. Pacers are allowed from Goring-on-Thames onwards, one pacer on foot only. A drop bag can be transported from the start to CP5 and the finish (maximum 50 litres). Required kit includes a charged mobile phone, GPX route access, at least 1 litre water capacity, foil blanket, primary and backup lights, waterproof jacket with hood and sealed seams, warm clothing, basic first aid, reusable cup and payment method.
