The Railway Relay

The Railway Relay is a team relay running event along the Formartine and Buchan Way, the former railway line now used as a traffic-free shared path between Peterhead and Ellon. The route covers approximately 27 miles and follows the traffic-free corridor of the old railway.

Teams of three to five runners share the total distance across nine relay legs. Each leg ranges from two to four miles, with teams sending a runner at each changeover, then driving to the next handover point and repeating the sequence until the finish in Ellon.

Organisers provide a full set of instructions and race-day guidance from the event director. Staggered starting waves are used so teams are released in groups. Typical completion times for teams range from under three hours to over five hours.

Entry is by team and the fee is £40 per team. At the finish area participants receive a free drink and a finisher’s medal. Alcoholic and soft drinks are available and a barbecue will be on site with food for purchase. Organisers can accommodate larger teams on request. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
