The Railway Relay

The Railway Relay is a team running event that follows the Formartine and Buchan Way, a route established on a former railway line. The course spans approximately 27 miles from Peterhead to Ellon. The path is a traffic-free, shared-use surface suitable for various participants.

Teams consist of 3 to 5 people who share the total distance across 9 relay legs. These individual legs vary in length, ranging from 2 to 4 miles. The format requires teams to transport their runners between designated changeover points along the route. While the standard team size is up to five members, larger groups can be accommodated upon request.

The event utilizes staggered starting waves every 30 minutes. Participant completion times generally range between three and five hours. The route concludes in Ellon, where a finish area is established for all teams.

The entry fee is £40 per team. Each participating team receives a full set of instructions and guidance during the event. Registration includes the following for participants:

  • 27 mile total relay distance
  • Finisher's medal for each team member
  • Food and drinks provided at the finish area in Ellon

The course is designed for social participation, and the route is entirely separate from motor vehicle traffic along the old railway corridor. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
