About the race
The Formartine & Buchan Railway 12&6 Ultra is a timed running event along the former Formartine and Buchan railway line between Maud railway station and Auchnagatt village hall. The line between Maud and Auchnagatt is estimated at about 4.3 miles, and competitors attempt to cover as much distance as they can within the allotted time.
There are two course formats:
- 12 Hour event
- 6 Hour event
For the 12 hour event competitors must gain a minimum distance of 26.3 miles to qualify for a medal and goodie bag; a few extra miles may be required to complete and confirm that minimum lap. Mini laps will be open toward the end of the race and only completed mini short laps are counted.
Support crews are permitted and may provide assistance at either end of the course. Completion of a marathon is preferred but not required. Age restrictions apply: participants must be 20 years or older and follow rules under Scottish Athletics.
Entry details listed for the event include entry fees of UKA Member £60.00 and Non Member £62.00, entries opening 16 May 2026 and closing 14 March 2027. Prizes are offered across categories for the 12 hour and 6 hour events, plus an overall male and female champion trophy returned to the organisers each year.
