The Mystery Drop - St Chads Terrace
The Mystery Drop is an off-road navigation race with an unknown start location and a secret finish point in Shrewsbury. Competitors are dropped at a remote point that is approximately 15 miles as the crow flies from Shrewsbury, and should expect to cover more than that distance on foot.
Registration takes place at St Chads Terrace, at the top of Shrewsbury Quarry Park, where each participant receives a GPS tracker, an emergency kit and a security sealed bag for their phone. Phones must be carried in the sealed bag and may only be used in an emergency or to withdraw from the event. Trackers are used to monitor competitors and must be returned after the race; unreturned devices incur a £100 replacement fee.
Participants are transported blindfolded to the drop point. Removing the blindfold before the drop leads to disqualification. The finish location is revealed only at the drop point.
The event enforces specific rules: no maps, no personal GPS devices, no vehicles or other transport such as bikes or horses, and no trespassing on private land. Certain busy roads including the A49, A5 and M54 must not be used unless a public footpath applies. Unsafe actions can result in disqualification. Team entries must include at least two members, all of whom must finish, and team results are based on the mean average of individual times. Individual and team prizes are awarded.
