Event Overview

The Mad Mallard is a timed trail race held during the night. Participants choose to run for a set number of hours on a looped course within Henry Horton State Park. All proceeds benefit The Sgt David Hierholzer Fallen Warrior Foundation, a nonprofit that provides backpacks and school supplies for children.

Course Details

The course is a 3-mile loop on the Ronnie Bowers Wetland Trail. It follows the Duck River and passes through cane thickets, cedar groves, and hardwood forest. The route is mostly single-track dirt trails, has roughly 144 feet of climb, and is described as completely runnable.

The course will be marked with glow sticks and reflective markers. Participants are required to bring their own headlamp or light source.

Race Format & Amenities

The event offers four timed races:

  • 3-hour night time trail race
  • 6-hour night time trail race
  • 12-hour night time trail race
  • 24-hour night.. into day... into night again trail race

A main aid station at the start/finish line will be open throughout the event. It will provide snacks, cold water, sodas, watermelon, and Tailwind hydration. Organizers mention they will "fire up the grill" later in the event.

The atmosphere is described as a laid-back, grassroots event where family, friends, and spectators are welcome. Tent camping is permitted.

Awards & Special Prizes

All runners receive a finisher medal and swag bag. Awards are given to the female and male runners with the most laps in each timed race. A special Mad Mallard Belt Buckle is awarded to anyone who runs 100 miles within the 24-hour race. There is also a $100 prize for anyone who exceeds 104 miles in 24 hours.
