The Llangollen 50k
The Llangollen 50k is an ultra-distance race held in the Dee Valley around the town of Llangollen, with the event based at Llangollen Leisure Centre, Dinbren Road, LL20 8TG. The route links two way-marked 15 mile linear routes on either side of the river, with a short extra section to complete the 50k distance. The outbound leg follows the Dee Valley Way to Corwen and the return uses the North Berwyn Way. The course reaches the Berwyn hilltop of Moel Fferna at 2,071 ft and accumulates nearly 6,000 ft of ascent.
There are three staffed checkpoints with feed stations located at 11 km (Bwlch y Groes SJ15270 44344), 23.8 km (Corwen Leisure Centre SJ08265 44166) and 39 km (Ceiriog Forest SJ14865 39348). All participants receive a medal. Given the terrain and climbs, much walking is expected for many competitors, and the route offers extended views above the valley and opportunities for mutual support among runners.
Due to the remoteness and distance, organisers require specific kit. Required items include full body waterproof cover, hat and gloves, buff, map (provided by the organiser), at least 1 litre of water at the start, a fully charged mobile phone and a foil blanket.
