Event Format
The Last Boyscout is a Last Man Standing race format held on the Boyscout Trail at Ferne Clyffe State Park. The race is designed to reward endurance over speed. Registration is capped at 75 participants. All participants receive a shirt and a memorabilia item.
Course Details
The course consists of two different loops. The Day Loop is 4.167 miles long with approximately 600 feet of climbing per loop. It includes single-track trail, jeep road trail, and a section of road. The trail contains two notable hills, with the Boyscout Trail being the steepest. The Night Loop, which starts in the evening, is an out-and-back route with a north and south turnaround. This loop is approximately 75% paved road. Runners are required to wear a headlamp and reflective vest at night. Both loops have the potential for two creek crossings, depending on rainfall. The only aid station is located at the start/finish area, which is a covered pavilion. It provides water, ice, food, and later hot food.
Rules and Venue
The format is inspired by the Big Backyard Ultra. Runners must complete each loop within one hour and be in the starting corral to begin the next loop. Failure to do so results in elimination. The race continues until only one runner finishes a loop; that runner is declared the winner. The event is held at Ferne Clyffe State Park, at the Hillside pavilion. The park offers electric and primitive campgrounds and is located near Interstate 57 and Interstate 24. The event is organized by the River to River Runners Club.
