The Last Boyscout
The Last Boyscout is a Last Man Standing race held on the Boyscout Trail at Ferne Clyffe State Park in Goreville, Illinois. The event uses repeated loops of a measured course; each loop is 4.167 miles and entrants must complete a loop within one hour to continue. The sequence repeats until a single runner completes a loop and is declared the winner.
The Day Loop includes single track trail, jeep road trail, and a little over a mile on paved road. The route is described as 100 percent runnable with a few mildly technical sections and two notable hills, the steepest being the Boyscout Trail. Each loop has about 600 feet of climbing. A Night Loop follows an out and back pattern with north and south turnarounds, and is roughly 75 percent paved road; runners are required to wear a headlamp and reflective vest during night segments. Both courses can include up to two creek crossings depending on rainfall.
The start and finish area is the Hillside pavilion at Ferne Clyffe Dam and serves as the only aid station. The event provides water, ice, food, and hot food later in the race, but participants are expected to be self sufficient. Registration is capped at 75 runners and all entrants receive a shirt and memorabilia. The race is a River to River Runners Club event.
