When and Where

The event will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026. The specific course and start location will be determined based on snow and stream conditions.

What is the Event?

The John Cappis is a mountaineering trek, conceived in honor of John Cappis, a founder of the Hardrock 100. The course changes from year to year. It generally involves summiting several peaks around Silverton, Colorado. The trek covers an approximate distance of 50k with about 19,000 feet of elevation gain. The elevation ranges from 9,300 to 13,300 feet. The course is largely unmarked and off-trail, with a GPS track provided to participants. The time limit is 19 hours.

Before You Register

The event is only open to qualified applicants. Participants must be members of the Sky Pilots Endurance Navigators club. Applicants must also demonstrate suitable mountain experience, particularly with off-trail travel in rugged terrain like the San Juan Mountains. All applicants are initially placed on a waitlist until their qualifications are reviewed and approved.

Important Considerations

This is not a typical running event. Finishing the full distance within the time limit is very difficult. The course presents numerous hazards, including remote terrain where rescue could be slow. Support is very limited, with only basic checkpoints. Participants must be self-sufficient, with strong navigation skills and the ability to assess and respond to mountain weather. Items like ice axes and traction devices have been required in some years. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
