The John Cappis : Silverton, CO
The John Cappis is a high-elevation, off-trail mountain run held near Silverton, Colorado. The course is unmarked but a GPS track is provided. The event is roughly 50K with about 19,000 ft of cumulative elevation gain and runs at elevations between approximately 9,300 ft and 13,300 ft. A time cutoff is enforced, typically 19 hours, and participants receive credit for the distance completed within the time limit.
The run requires membership in the Sky Pilots Endurance Navigators and submission of qualifications demonstrating substantial mountain experience. Much of the route is off-trail and exposed, so navigation skills, experience with rugged terrain and weather assessment, and appropriate mountain gear are expected. Some years have required ice axes and traction devices.
Support on course is limited compared to a typical ultra. There are a few basic checkpoints with calories and fluids, crew is allowed only at designated points, no pacers or caches are permitted, and GPS is strongly advised. The course is remote, rescue could take hours or days, and finishing the full distance within the cutoff is uncommon. Typical participant speeds range from about 1 to 2 mph on account of steep, high, and rugged terrain. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
