Hardrock 100
The Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run is a loop ultramarathon held in the San Juan Mountain Range of southern Colorado. The course follows a mix of 4WD roads, dirt trails and cross country terrain and is measured at 100 miles in length. Runners experience a cumulative gain of 33,197 feet and an equal descent for a total elevation change of 66,394 feet, with an average elevation of 11,186 feet. The course low point is 7,680 feet at Ouray and the high point is 14,048 feet at Handies Peak.
Parts of the operation take place on public lands under special permit from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. Event organization includes management of entrants and wait lists, a system for pairing runners and pacers, volunteer-run aid stations, and published manuals for runners and volunteers. The event maintains a recurring scholarship program for local students; this year the program awarded six high school scholarships and ten continuing education awards totaling $47,000, bringing the program total to 165 awards and $366,050 distributed. The organization also issues periodic updates on snowpack and trail conditions and reports on board governance and operational changes.
The event acknowledges that the land traversed is the ancestral homeland of the Ute, Puebloan and Diné peoples and recognizes their continued presence in Colorado. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
